It's meant to be something positive (i.e. orthodox as opposed to untraditional/deviant). An Islamic Dictionary defines it as thus: Conforming to established doctrine, especially in religion; conventional. Those religious branches which interpret doctrinal law as authoritative and apply its principles and regulations to contemporary living (Source).
