Muhammad Kariye: Three Fundamental Principles (Part 1)

IlmNoted by

Bismillah – In the name of Allah

  • The author – Muhammed ibn Abdul Wahhab – started his book with Bismillah to follow the example set by the Quran  (every Surah, except Surah Tawbah,  starts with the Basmallah).
  • He also did this to follow the Sunnah of the Prophet.

Allah

  • The title of the sole Lord who created and fashioned everything.
  • All of His other names follow after this one.

Ar-Rahman

  • One of the names of Allah.
  • This name is particular to Allah meaning people can not name themselves Ar-Rahman
  • It means the one who has as His attribute very great and extensive mercy
  • Key word: Extensive mercy
  • This mercy is for everyone – Mankind, Jinn, and animals

Ar-Raheem

  • One of the names of Allah
  • It means, the one who is merciful to others.
  • Ar-Raheem is the one who bestows mercy upon others. (He has mercy on them)
  • This mercy is for the Muslims.

Know, may Allah have mercy upon you that it is Wajib (obligatory) on you that you know four things

1. Knowledge & Awareness of Allah

  • Know his Laws
  • Submit to him
  • Follow his Shariah

The Jahmiyyah (from Jahm ibn Safwan) claim that Iman = Ma’rifah

  • Not true!
  • If it was this would mean that Iblees is the Greatest Mu’min of the face of this earth, because he knew for a FACT that Allah was his Rab,  his Lord
  • Iblees rejected one Sajda (prostration), and he is destined to Jahannam (Hellfire). So what about those who don’t pray?
  • Also if this was true then Abu Talib the Prophet’s uncle would also be considered a Mu’min. But a Mu’min doesn’t go to Hell and the prophet told us that Abu Talib was in Hell.

The Ash-Sha’irah believe that Iman = Tasdeeq. They also say that you don’t have to proclaim the shahadah unless you are under threat. And that you don’t actually have to ever say the shahadah and you can still be a Mu’min.

Homework: Do some research about Al-Murji’ah and write a page about them. Some notes from HW:

Al-Murji’ah

  • They believe that Faith (Iman) does not increase or decrease.
  • They believe that deeds do not affect the faith in anyway. Even if you commit the major big sins.
  • They believe that knowing about Allah and his Prophet is enough to confirm one’s faith.
  • There are two groups.
  • One Group believes that Iman is based on knowledge. As long as you know that there is Allah, then you are a Mu’min.
  • The Other Group says that Iman is belief in Allah (Tasdeeq) but nothing will negate your Iman, not even major sins or anything.

jzk for the reminder about the proper definitions of Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem. I had learned them a long time ago but had forgotten the major differences. Also, a Mu’min doesn’t go to Hell-fire? I never knew that. And can you please explain who are the Jahmiyyah, Ash-Sha’irah and Al-Murji’ah? Do they belong to diff. sects of Islam or something?

  2. Mashā’Allāh, this was really nice. Was this as part of a series? I’d like to benefit from the rest of it, Inshā’Allāh.

  3. Yes it was a class actually, I’ll have to find my old notebook where I took the notes inshallah.

  4. Actually I have them typed out alhamdulillah
